Team-based battle set in the Crash universe

Crash Team Rumble is an arcade title from Toys for Bob. This action-packed multiplayer pits two teams of four players against each other. Play as one of the heroes and villains of the Crash universe in various stages and game modes. Each character has a unique ability, all geared toward helping their respective teams capture more Wumpa Fruit than the other.

With the recognizable character designs from the Crash Bandicoot franchise, combined with cross-play support, Crash Team Rumble is a fun game to play with friends. Other Crash titles include Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled.

Build your own Crash Team

Crash Team Rumble is often seen as the spiritual successor to Crash Bash on the PSX. However, this release is far from simple party games, it is expected to be a competitive team-based battle tagged as a strategic platformer. The main premise is to collect more Wumpa Fruits and deposit them in each team’s drop-off zone. Players can also block and attack their opponents to prevent them from collecting.

For strategic purposes, the game’s roster is divided into three roles. Blockers defend your Wumpa Bank and prevent enemies from scoring. Scorers are agile characters specializing in snatching and taking home fruits. Lastly, Boosters focus on capturing gem pads to boost your current scores. Its roster is drawn from all across the Crash Bandicoot IP, from the titular marsupial to lesser-known characters such as the gender-swapped Dr. N. Tropy.

With a smooth gameplay loop and a straightforward premise, it’s an addictive and casual experience good for several hours. Also, the characters are evenly distributed among the roles, making the overall experience balanced. While the characters can attack and take out enemies, remember that the main point of the game is to score points and not rack up kill scores, forcing players to cooperate for a chance at victory.

An addictive multiplayer experience

Every once in a while, the people behind Crash Bandicoot depart from the usual single-player adventure platformer and try their hand at other genres. In this instance, Crash Team Rumble is a pretty solid release. A good range of characters from various titles, distributed among roles for competitive and strategic gameplay Its balanced and rigid structure is worth commending, although fragging is delegated to second priority.

  • Pros

    • Generally balanced roster
    • Good focus on strategic gameplay
    • Retains familiar Crash aesthetics
    • Has cross-play support
  • Cons

    • Enemy fragging is not prioritized
